The First Enlargement

The first enlargement

The Northern Tower and the enlargement (plan by arch. Raccanello)A document(1) states that the foundation of the castrum dates back to the year 1121. On the contrary, it is correct to interpret such a document with as referring to the first enlargement of the castrum by Poppon. In 1221 the Northern Tower was duplicated according to the prescriptions by Vitruvius: we can identify the enlargement because of the change of the measurement unit adopted for the novel construction(2).
